A groundbreaking collaboration between SU.RE (Sustainable Resolution), initiated by Reliance Brands, United Nations India, the Ministry of Textiles, the Government of India, and the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India, and the British Council aims to fortify sustainability within India's fashion industry. This partnership not only enables SU.RE signatories to transition into sustainable brands but also fosters collaboration with like-minded partners globally.
Launched in 2019, SU.RE represents the Indian apparel industry's largest voluntary commitment to sustainability, with 16 major brands as signatories. These brands have committed to transitioning to sustainable supply chains by 2030, marking a significant shift towards eco-friendly practices in the sector.
Taking their commitment further, SU.RE partners have unveiled a new project spanning from May to October 2024. This initiative comprises three phases designed to guide participating signatories on their sustainability journey through mentorship sessions, actionable plans development, and addressing challenges such as consumer perception and stakeholder alignment.
In the first phase, SU.RE delegates embarked on a UK Study Tour, engaging with industry leaders such as designer Christopher Raeburn and Harriet Vocking, CEO of Eco-Age. They also participated in a leadership roundtable, 'Building Circular Systems for India', hosted by SU.RE with Global Fashion Agenda and supported by the British Council at the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.
This collaboration not only empowers SU.RE signatories to enhance their sustainability efforts but also opens avenues for collaboration with emerging innovators in the field. The recognition of SU.RE as a partner by esteemed organizations like the UN, British Council, and Global Fashion Summit signifies a significant milestone in driving the sustainability movement in India.
Through initiatives like these, the fashion industry in India is poised to combine innovation with circularity to achieve large-scale environmental and social sustainability. The partnership between SU.RE and the British Council, along with engagement in forums like the Global Fashion Summit, facilitates mentorship and exposure to international best practices, driving a transformative shift towards a more enduring future in fashion.
