National Council of Textile Organizations Addresses Challenges Facing U.S. Textile Industry

Norman Chapman, Chairman of the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), delivered a sobering assessment of the state of the U.S. textile industry during the organization's 20th Annual Meeting on April 11th. Chapman's address shed light on the significant economic hurdles confronting the industry, exacerbated by predatory trade practices and customs fraud that threaten the integrity of the domestic supply chain.

In his speech, Chapman underscored the critical role of the U.S. textile sector in bolstering the nation's economy and serving as a cornerstone of both the military and public health industrial base. However, he also highlighted the unprecedented crisis facing the industry due to rapidly deteriorating market conditions, compounded by unchecked foreign trade practices and lax enforcement of customs regulations.

"Despite being a vital contributor to the U.S. economy, the domestic textile industry is grappling with challenges of historic proportions," Chapman remarked. "We are facing an onslaught of predatory trade behaviors that undermine our competitiveness and jeopardize the integrity of our supply chain. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to overcoming these obstacles and preserving the resilience and innovative spirit that define our industry."

Chapman's remarks resonated with industry stakeholders who recognize the urgency of addressing the systemic challenges facing the U.S. textile sector. Despite the daunting obstacles ahead, Chapman expressed confidence in the industry's ability to weather the storm and emerge stronger.

As President and CEO of Inman Mills, a prominent manufacturer of yarns and woven fabrics in South Carolina, Chapman brings firsthand experience to his role as NCTO Chairman. His leadership underscores the organization's dedication to advocating for the interests of textile manufacturers across the United States.

The NCTO's 20th Annual Meeting, held from April 9th to 11th at The Watergate Hotel in Washington, provided a platform for industry leaders to strategize and collaborate on solutions to the pressing challenges facing the U.S. textile industry. With a renewed commitment to advocacy and collaboration, the industry aims to navigate the current crisis and position itself for long-term success in the global marketplace.
