ITMF Releases International Textile Industry Statistics

The International Textile Manufacturer Federation (ITMF) has unveiled the latest edition of its International Textile Industry Statistics (ITIS), offering insights into productive capacity and raw materials consumption in the short-staple organized (spinning mill) sector across global textile-producing nations.

The comprehensive report reveals noteworthy trends and developments in the textile industry, showcasing a robust growth trajectory in key areas. According to the ITIS report:

Spindle Growth and Investment Trends

  • The global number of installed short-staple spindles witnessed a growth from 225 million units in 2021 to 227 million units in 2022.
  • Open-end rotors experienced a remarkable surge, increasing from 8.3 million in 2021 to 9.5 million in 2022—the highest growth ever recorded in this sector.
  • Investment in these sectors notably favored Asia, indicating a disproportionate focus on the region.
  • The number of installed airjet spindles continued to rise across all regions in 2022.

Shift in Loom Technologies

  • The substitution between shuttle and shuttle-less looms persisted in 2022.
  • Installed shuttle-less looms increased from 1.72 million in 2021 to 1.85 million in 2022, while shuttle looms reached 952 thousand.

Raw Material Consumption

  • Despite the overall growth in the industry, total raw material consumption in the short-staple organized sector slightly decreased from 45.6 million tons in 2021 to 44.26 million tons in 2022.
  • Raw cotton and synthetic short-staple fibers experienced a decrease of -2.5% and -0.7%, respectively.
  • On the positive side, consumption of cellulosic short-staple fibers increased by 2.5%.

The ITIS report offers a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of the global textile industry, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of the sector. The surge in spindle installations, investment trends, and shifts in loom technologies underscore the industry's commitment to innovation and efficiency. The report serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders seeking to navigate the dynamic textile market.
