In a recent development within the corridors of power in India, Giriraj Singh, the Member of Parliament from the Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar, has been appointed as the new Minister of Textiles in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This announcement comes as part of a press communique released by the President’s Secretariat, marking a significant change in the leadership of one of India’s crucial ministries.
Giriraj Singh, a seasoned politician with a track record of serving in various ministerial capacities, brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. Prior to his appointment as Minister of Textiles, Singh held pivotal positions in both state and central governments. He previously served as the Minister of Cooperative, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Resources Development in the Government of Bihar, showcasing his commitment to rural and agricultural development.
During Modi’s first term, Singh served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), where he played a crucial role in promoting the growth and sustainability of small-scale industries, a backbone of India’s economy.
In May 2019, Singh assumed the role of Cabinet Minister for the newly formed Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries, demonstrating his versatility and ability to handle diverse portfolios. His tenure in this ministry witnessed several initiatives aimed at bolstering the livestock and fisheries sectors, vital for the livelihoods of millions of Indians.
July 2021 witnessed another elevation in Singh’s political career as he took on the responsibilities of Minister of Rural Development and Minister of Panchayati Raj in the Second Modi ministry following a Cabinet reshuffle. His tenure in these ministries was marked by a focus on grassroots development and empowerment, aligning with the government's vision of inclusive growth and rural prosperity.
Joining Singh in steering the textile sector forward is Pabitra Margherita, a Member of Parliament representing Assam in the Rajya Sabha. Margherita, who assumed office in March 2022, has been appointed as the Minister of State for Textiles. His journey in politics, which began in 2014, has seen him undertake various roles within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including serving as a spokesperson and leading the party’s social media outreach in Assam.
Margherita’s experience as the Member Secretary of the State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare in Assam underscores his commitment to youth empowerment and development agendas.
The appointment of Giriraj Singh and Pabitra Margherita reflects the Modi government’s continued focus on strengthening key sectors and fostering socio-economic development across the country. As they assume their respective roles in the Ministry of Textiles, all eyes will be on them to navigate the challenges and opportunities inherent in this critical sector, driving innovation, enhancing competitiveness, and ensuring the welfare of stakeholders across the textile value chain.
